CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WATE) — The Vols and NC State went head to head for the first time in over a decade in this year’s Duke’s Mayo Classic.
Neither team was able to find success on their first drives. Tennessee found the momentum first though, with Dylan Sampson breaking into the end zone on a 9 yard run with nine seconds left in the first quarter.
Early into the second quarter Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava threw his first career interception. However, NC State was only able to get a field goal off of it. That score came off a 24-yard kick from Kanoah Vinesett. The Vols still held the lead, 7-3. Iamaleava finished the night with two interceptions.
That would end up being the only score of the first half for the Wolfpack, but the Vols were far from done.
On the response to NC State’s field goal, Tennessee managed one of their own, Max Gilbert sending it 35 yards through the uprights, putting the Vols up by a touchdown.

Then it was time for the defense to have their moment. Just when NC State’s offense was picking up speed, Will Brooks intercepted Grayson McCall and ran it back 85 yards for the Vols first pick-6 of the season, as well as Brooks’ first interception of his career.
That would do it for Tennessee touchdowns in the first half, but Gibert tacked on a career-high 45-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to give the Vols a 20-3 lead at the break.
The second half was more of the same for the Vols, except this time they decided to run away with it.
First it was Iamaleava to Miles Kitselman for a 15-yard score, that made it 27-3. Gilbert was able to tack on his third and what would be his fianl field goal of the night from 36 yards out. Then Iamaleava went for it himself, 31 yards to the house for a 37-3 lead.
In the fourth quarter it was Sampson striking again off a 34-yard touchdown run.
Finally, Holden Staes brought in his first touchdown as a Vol to cap off the scoring, hauling in an 18-yard toss from Iamaleava for a 51-10 lead, which would hold as the final.
