Method Man Claims He’s Never Been Paid Streaming Royalties

Hip-hop veteran Method Man isn’t very pleased with the way streaming platforms have done business with him.

The rap icon shared his critical opinions of the industry during a recent interview, revealing that he hasn’t made any money from his music played on streaming platforms.

Method Man

Method Man opened up about the situation during a sit-down with Hot 97’s Wale Ogunleye. After the interviewer asked him to grade the music industry currently, the 53-year-old awarded it an F and explained:

“Took them too long to adjust to streaming.”

He furthered:

“They’re drowning and fighting, trying to tread water right now. I don’t think it’s really working out because the way the industry, or rather the way music is received, has changed so much that they either have to adjust or get the hell out of the way.”

Continuing, Method Man – who’s reportedly bringing in more than 3 million monthly listeners on his solo Spotify page and another 5.6 million via his Wu-Tang Clan page alone – alleged that he has yet to see a single cent from any streamers. After expressing some concerns over artists’ rights with the rise of AI, he stated:

“Honestly I’ve never gotten a streaming check for any of my music.”

Despite his own experience with streaming, Method Man appears to remain hopeful for the future. He went on to grade today’s artists an A, celebrating the pushing of boundaries and blending of genres. The musician, real name Clifford Smith Jr., has maintained a decades-long career, beginning back in 1992 when he joined with Redman to create the East Coast hip hop collective Wu-Tang Clan. The group, known for hits such as “C.R.E.A.M” and “Protect Ya Neck” is highly venerated in the rap culture, and has sold over a million albums worldwide.

Method Man went on to continue selling millions of records throughout his solo career and eventually branched into acting. The entertainer most recently starred in 50 Cent’s Powerbook II: Ghost, though the series was canceled earlier this year following its 4th season.
