Lil Wayne Says He Stopped Writing Down His Rap Lyrics Because Of Jay-Z

Lil Wayne’s rap game was forever changed thanks to Jay-Z!

In a new interview with “The Pivot Podcast,” Lil Wayne, real name Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., opened up and shared some untold stories surrounding his rise to fame and stardom as a child. The 40-year-old rap star also discussed influential rappers who have had an impact on his career as an entertainer in the music industry.

During the sit-down, Lil Wayne reflected on his favorite rappers and revealed that rap mogul Jay-Z, 53, influenced him to stop writing down lyrics on paper. When one of the hosts asked Wayne if Jay-Z inspired him, the New Orleans native said,

“When I heard [Jay-Z doesn’t write], I stopped. The moment I heard it I stopped. You can ask him about it. The moment I heard it, ‘Man I heard that n*gga Jay-Z don’t write no more.’”

Wayne added,

“When we went in the studio in Raj Smoove studio and we did ‘10,000 Bars,’ and that was the last time I rapped anything off of a paper.” 

At one point during the chat, the “Lollipop” rapper touched on what it was like growing up as a child entertainer and making music with rap stars in his hometown. Wayne reportedly signed his first record deal at the age of 12 with Cash Money Records as the youngest rapper on the label.

Wayne said,

“First of all, as a kid, you gotta remember I was a kid. As a kid, everyday for me was f*cking Astroworld. They don’t know that. It was regular to them and they were just sitting around in the office all day, literally not doing nothing, phone ringing, literally talking to whatever fan that’s calling the office number. That was the highlight — I’m enjoying every bit of it.”

He continued,

“This Disneyland to me. I’m around real rappers that really rap and I go back to school with my other 11-year-old friends.” 

Wayne also shared how he gained support from his childhood friends after their parents banned them from buying his first album.

“My 11-year-old friends didn’t believe me but their parents wouldn’t let them get my album anyway, we cussing. So I gotta go prove it to them and show them my name on the back of that m*th*f*ck*a and sh*t.”
