RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) – A driver lost his life, and another person was injured following a Friday evening crash along Interstate 24 in Rutherford County.
According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the crash occurred in the eastbound lanes of I-24 near mile marker 72 on Friday, Jan. 26.
Authorities reported a 2004 Honda Civic — driven by 49-year-old Diego Lux Gomez — was traveling east on I-24 when he ran off the right side of the roadway.
Gomez reportedly overcorrected and lost control of the vehicle, which resulted in the Honda facing the wrong way. In a crash report, THP said Gomez attempted to get on the left shoulder but was struck by a Volvo tractor.
The Volvo tractor struck the driver’s side of the Honda and both vehicles came to a final stop on the center median, authorities said.
According to THP, Gomez was killed in the crash and his 23-year-old passenger sustained injuries. Both were wearing their seat belts. The extent of the passenger’s injuries are unknown.
The 43-year-old driver of the Volvo tractor, from Georgia, was also wearing a seat belt and did not sustain any injuries, said THP.
No other information was immediately released.
