Dalai Lama Issues Apology After Facing Backlash For Asking Young Boy To Suck His Tongue At Public Event
The Dalai Lama is making headlines…and not for his spiritual guidance.
According to reports, early Monday (Apr. 10) the Tibetan spiritual leader issued an apology after a video of him asking a young boy to suck his tongue at a public event surfaced on the internet. In the now-viral video, the Nobel peace laureate is captured giving the boy a kiss on the lips in front of a clapping audience.

Reportedly, sticking out your tongue is a traditional greeting in Tibet and is known today as a “form of respect.” However, the official Twitter page of the Dalai Lama, 87, issued a statement apologizing for the questionable moment.
“A video clip has been circulating that shows a recent meeting when a young boy asked his Holiness the Dalai Lama if he could give him a hug.”
The statement continued:
“His Holiness wishes to apologized to the boy and his family, as well as his many friends across the world, for the hurt his words may have caused.”
The statement concluded:
“His Hoiness often teases people he meets in an innocent and playful way, even in public and before cameras. He regrets the incident.”
Tenzin Gyatso is the 14th and current Dalai Lama today and lives as a refugee in India.
