Carlethia “Carlee” Nichole Russel
Carlee Russell has officially been charged with 2 misdemeanors!
Carlee Russell–the Alabama woman who lied about being abducted for 49 hours–is now facing criminal charges due to her kidnapping hoax gone wrong. Prosecutors in Hoover, Alabama has charged Carlee with 2 misdemeanors–falsely reporting to law enforcement authorities and falsely reporting of an incident with each charge carrying up to one year in jail.
According to Hoover Police Chief Nicholas C. Derzis, the arrest warrant was issued earlier today (July 28). Carlee surrendered to authorities with her attorney standing by her side. She was later released from jail after posting $2,000 bond.
In a news conference, Derzis had this to say about Carlee’s actions:
“Her decisions that night created panic and alarm for the citizens of our city and even across the nation as concern grew that a kidnapper was on the loose using a small child as bait. The story opened wounds for families whose loved ones really were victims of kidnappings, some of which even helped organize searches.”

Russell’s attorney, Emory Anthony, told sources:
“What we’re dealing with is a young lady who made a huge mistake. She’s been arrested and she’s been charged and she’s eager to finish up and be through with it. She’s dealing with some issues..We will look forward to going to court.”
When asked how Carlee Russell is handling the charges, he said:
“She’s doing like anybody else charged with something. She realized that, although it’s two misdemeanors, it’s still a serious offense. She understands that.”
As you may already know, earlier this month, 25-year-old Carlee Russell went missing for nearly 48 hours. She called 911 on her way home from work, claiming there was a child walking on Interstate 459. After getting out to help, Russell said she was kidnapped by a man who had orange hair. The UAB nursing student eventually found her way home, telling authorities she managed to escape.
However, she has since retracted her claims. During a press conference, Chief Derzis shared the remarks from her lawyer, Emory Anthony, and said,
“There was no kidnapping on Thursday, July 13, 2023. My client did not see a baby on the side of the road. My client did not leave the Hoover area when she was identified as a missing person. My client did not have help in this incident, but this was a single act done by herself.”
In her statement, Carlee Russell asked for forgiveness and prayers from the members of her community, law enforcement and volunteers who were searching for her.
Derzis says that police are still unclear about Russells’ whereabouts during the 49 hours that she was missing.
